Pictures Of Ryan

September 4, 2016

This is my boyfriend, Ryan.

A lot of bloggers hide their partners from their blogs. Whilst I respect and understand the reasons for doing so, I don’t want you to picture my boyfriend as a blank canvas or shadowy figure – the way I sometimes do when other people’s partners are mentioned without being shown. Ryan contributes to this blog in so many ways: listening to drafts, sharing articles, taking photos and holding fiery conversations with me, the embers of which often turn into posts. He deserves a portrait of his own on this digital wall.

Ryan is tall, thin and very striking. Most people are initially taken aback when they meet him; strangers stare and friends only stop commenting after they’ve seen him a few times. But in photos it’s different. The camera absorbs the initial shock, and you can appreciate the angles of his face and the copper in his hair without being overwhelmed by his tallness. His height means he is constantly framed by trees and clouds and sky: the best of all backdrops.

Ryan is often insecure about the way he looks – not something I’ve encountered in many of the boys I’ve dated. I suppose when people so often gawp at his frame or comment on his complexion it’s understandable. It’s not just strangers who jeer or shoot disbelieving looks. His friends and acquaintances fall over themselves to post mocking pictures on his wall or show me unflattering pictures of Ryan and tell me how “weird” he looks. He winds up taking the piss out of himself; pre-empting the ginger jokes and ridiculing his impressive stature. It’s an upsetting state of affairs.

I think he is particularly wonderful-looking: all sharp lines and floppy hair, endless freckles and massive jade eyes. I wish he could embrace it instead of looking away when I reach for the camera, instead of always refusing to smile and asking me to delete photos of him. It’s not hard to imagine the chorus of jeering he hears as he winces at his own image. If you’ve been reading this blog for a while then you’ll recognise all of these backgrounds from previous posts.* Ryan has been sharing the same space as me for a while now in the real world, and now I invite you to picture him whenever you imagine this blog world. Thank you for hopefully not leaving an onslaught of ginger jokes in the comments. <3

  2. Ryan is awesome! The image that sticks in my head of him is standing at Columbia Road Market, almost shyly asking for permission to give someone’s fluffy dog a wee cuddle. I think he spent like ten minutes just scratching that pup’s belly, and they both had matching blissful looks on their faces. <3 xxx

Im glad that you’ve found a twin-lovely-being to be in this world with.
(And for the record, I know no ginger jokes. At all.)
Beauty is beauty, no matter what colors beauty shows up in.

I absolutely love this! You’re so right in what you say, my boyfriend does the same for my blog, little things that help when they don’t even know it!

Great idea for a post and the pictures are taken amazingly!

I love this. The camera loves Ryan! I would love to put up pictures of Mike but he’s so shy. He doesn’t even appear in my holiday vlog so it looks like I have a chauffeur, not a boyfriend! I’d love to feature him properly, as I hate that he just seems like a character in my blog rather than a real person but he won’t have any of it!

If it’s any consolation, this post has been on the drafts for MONTHS before Ryan agreed it could go up! He’s not shy but he is super self-conscious. Also – you do share pics of Mike on your twitter and stuff and I think that’s so lovely, so he’s not some hidden away figure 🙂 xxx

I have tears in my eyes, tears of joy and tears of sadness. You have captured the best and the best of Ryan in this blog! Ryan should stand PROUD not self conscious, proud of who he is and what he has achieved in life. Being tall makes him UNIQUE, not different, being unique and standing out in a crowd is far better than just melting into the crowd. As for the Auburn/Copper hair? Individualism. Xxx

I love this post. My boyfriend is such a huge part of my blog, as are some of my best friends. I don’t tend to post too many photos of them on posts, as my blog is much more wordy than photo-ey (ie, I’m lazy with my camera) but they, and he especially, shine through so much on my posts. I don’t really know where I’m going with this comment so I’ll end on this: It’s awesome to be able to include boyfriends in things like blogs, they deserve the recognition!

    Charlotte xx

  9. This post is one of the most wonderful acts of love I think I’ve ever seen and I can’t help but feel a need to follow you now to see yours and Ryan’s life unfold together.

And hey, Ryan? You have incredibly kind eyes. Embrace the camera.

  10. Ryan is beautiful as are you, I wonder if these odd people commenting are jealous of his stature and presence. The fact he looks so flipping cinematic. He really does. Hope he knows that. What a couple you guys make. I can tell he’s beautiful inside too. Lots of love x
